Shri Baba Thakur Das Ji

The Life and Legacy of Shri Baba Thakur Das Ji

As the saying goes, “The leaves of a promising plant are smooth from the start”—meaning greatness shows early. Baba Shraddharam Ji’s son, Shri Thakur Das, was exceptionally brilliant from childhood. Scholars were invited to his home to provide him with an education in scriptures, ethics, Hindi, and Sanskrit; arrangements were also made for him to study Urdu. Within a few years, he began expressing profound views on complex subjects.

Following the untimely passing of his father on the day of Kushotpatni Amavasya, a heavy responsibility suddenly fell upon him. Upon taking charge, he resolved to give the Dharamsal a new identity. In a short time, the landscape of Dharamsala Mahantan was transformed. He opened a school (Pathshala) for Hindi and Sanskrit education.

Through his enterprise, he brought in stone bricks from the forest known as Loh Langar to renovate the sacred cave (Tapobhoomi Gufa) and the Gaddi. By constructing new buildings, Shri Thakur Das Ji modernized the village infrastructure even before his formal coronation. Dharamsal became a commercial hub for neighboring villages, attracting skilled artisans and becoming famous as the “Dharamsal Bazar.” He expanded the Langar hall and built new rooms for pilgrims. His coronation ceremony was a landmark event of its time. For nearly fifty years, he managed the Gaddi, significantly enhancing the spiritual glory of Baba Nakodar Das Ji’s penance.
